PLOT SUMMARY: Evelyn and Daniela are best friends who live close to each other. They have many things in common including their almost twin apartments. For one last time, the girls play together like if it were any regular day. Evelyn del Rey is moving away, and the girls promise to visit and keep in touch. Will their friendship be everlasting?
ANALYSIS: Even though
it is a sad day for both girls, they keep a positive outlook by enjoying their
last day together. They play, smile and keep each other company until the last
minute. Their love for each other is
evident as they promise to keep in touch and seal that promise with a sparkly
heart sticker on their cheeks.
SETTING: The
setting where Daniela and Evelyn live shows how diverse their neighborhood
is. As they are playing in the building,
they pass by Mr. Miller, Mr. Soo and Señora Flores all
from different nationalities.
ILLUSTRATION ANALYSIS: The illustrations in the book were
created digitally. A variety of patterns are used throughout the book to show different
inside places such as the girls’ rooms, Evelyn’s living room and the hallway of
the apartment building. Outside the
colors used are warm toned depicting the season of fall.
THEME: The theme of
this book is friendship. The author demonstrate how two girls can become
best friends even when they have differences from their family composition to
their tone of skin color. The author
also shows that friendships can be lasting even when being physically apart.
CULTURAL MARKERS:
Use of
non-English words:
The few
words that are used in Spanish are used and spelled correctly. They sound natural within the text.
CONNECTIONS: Many students can connect to the story by thinking about a best friend
or a close cousin they enjoy spending the time with. Some students might also have gone through
the experience of losing a close friend.
Using the video tool Flipgrid, students will create a short video. The students will have a choice of sharing
whether they have had an experience of losing a friend like Daniela and Evelyn
or sharing something special they like to do with their best friend.
